Sex
Education for Indonesian
Do you
know what sex education is? If your age is 17 years old or more, you might
answer yes. Your answer might different from people around you. Avert (2008)
writes that “Sex
education, which is sometimes called sexuality education or sex and
relationships education, is the process of acquiring information and forming
attitudes and beliefs about sex, sexual identity, relationships and intimacy ” (para. 1). Sex education may also be defined
as "sexuality education," which means that it encompasses education
about all aspects of sexuality (Wikipedia, 2008). However,
not all people will answer immediately when he or she were asked about sex. They
argue that sex is something which should not be talked about publicly. People
judge sex as taboo thing because everyone knows about it. Sex had been a public
secret. It is not necessary to talk. In fact, sex is actually sacral thing if
you think that sex is a blessing from God to every human being. Everyone should
know what the exact meaning of sex is in order not happen a misunderstanding in
interpretation the meaning of sex itself. That is why, everyone should be given
an education about sex formally. In Indonesia, such sex education is still
being controversial issue. Some people agree that sex is important to be taught
in school because it can decrease the number of free sex, to formalize its
learning in school, and it can decrease the number of broken home.
One of
the purposes why sex education for Indonesian is important is to decrease free
sex. Free sex is absolutely not be allowed in Indonesia. However, there are
many Indonesian, especially teenagers, do sex freely. Because of no law rule to
forbid someone of doing it, he or she might think that I will not be sent to
the jail even thought I do sex freely. Whereas, there is a social rule which
must be obeyed. Someone will not be accepted as a member of community anymore
if he or she does sex freely even once. Besides, they do sex freely because
they might not know well the danger of sex disease, such as AIDS, Gonorrhoea,
Herpes Genitalis, Syphilis, etc. By giving sex education in school, students
will know more about sex. Not only about the danger of doing sex freely, but
also some norms that forbid someone to do it. That is why, sex education in
Indonesia is very important to decrease the number of free sex.
Secondly,
sex education is important to be taught formally. The department of Education
should give a proportion for sex education in school. Whitehead (1994)
says “sex
education in the schools is not new, of course, but never before has it
attempted to expose children to so much so soon” (para. 2). We must
include a new subject or class for teaching student about sex. Because why? Wikipedia
(2008) tells us that there are still many people learn about sex informally
such as by reading books or magazines, watching TV programs relate to sex,
finding information about sex on the Internet, etc. It is dangerous! Why? He or
she could misunderstand in catching some sex information because there is
nobody who guides him or her. Then he or she might adapt the wrong information
one and practice it. That is why, it is
very important to formalize sex education in school because sex is not a small
problem. It needs a long process to know it well with a good guidance. We have
to formalize it from now otherwise student can get it informally.
Finally,
the most significant and fundamental reason why sex education is important for
Indonesian is to decrease the number of broken home. Most of broken home in
Indonesia is caused by sex problem. A husband and wife do not know how to do
sex in order to get satisfaction for each other. For example, when a husband
and wife do sex, the wife might not get satisfaction because of something wrong
with the husband. He does not know how to satisfy his wife. Then, the wife
tries to find another person to get satisfaction in doing sex. The husband
feels alone because his wife leaves him. Then, he also finds another person to
do sex. That is why, by giving sex education for such husband and wife, they
will know how to do sex in order to get satisfaction for each person. Then, it
will keep family going for a long time, of course.
Clearly,
sex education in Indonesia is very important. However, because of some reasons,
many people argue that sex education is not important to be taught. One
argument states that some people, especially teenagers will have knowledge of
how to do sex healthily. After knowing it, they will might do sex freely. It
means that sex education does not decrease the number of free sex, but it makes
someone to do sex freely more and more. Another argument is education system in
Indonesia is suitable not for such sex education. There are still many subjects
that are more important to learn than sex, such as Geography, History,
Traditional Culture, etc. Last argument states that there is a few of sex
education expert in Indonesia. We need more experts from abroad if we want to formalize
sex education to be taught in school. Therefore, even thought there are some
arguments which state that sex education is important, the arguments fail
before solid reason, proving that sex education can increase the number of free
sex.
In
conclusion, sex education for Indonesian is very important to do because it can
decrease the number of free sex, to formalize its learning in school, and it
can decrease the number of broken home. Sex education in Indonesia is actually
still being a controversial issue. Some people agree that sex is important to
be taught in school. However, others disagree with that. In fact, sex is not a
big problem. The most important thing is how to teach sex healthily and
formally. That is why, I recommend that sex education should be legalized as
soon as possible. It must be a useful thing. Not only for certain people, but
also for all community of Indonesia.
